The Crank
- This is going to be one quick ride as the next 2-3 months will decide who has a shot at the Olympics. We will be all over it as the countdown to London selection begins. The Aussie team is yet to be decided outside of Brad Kahlefeldt and Emma Moffatt. Triathlon Australia's discretionary selection tool is ridiculous as is the fact that any one on the shadow squad can be replaced at any time by anyone. So if you want to go to the Olympics there's hope for you yet.
- We heard this week that former VIS big wheel Jono Hall has left his post. One of the best developmental coaches in the country, he'll be missed. We can't let this sort of talent leave the country for another federation, especially in an Olympic year.
- A big week of racing in both NZ and Australia. The Welcome Back Cotter award goes to Courtney Atkinson who did his bit to remind everyone that he is not a spent force in this Olympic year and that he someone very much in the mix.
- Young Aussie athlete Marcel Walkington is the real deal. This kid has all the tools to make the next Olympics (2016). Write the name down. If he gets it right he has a huge motor and a massive work ethic. Remember the name.
- Tweets of the week are a collection of tweets from the Brownlee brothers who will tell you they are not hard or old school but after reading these they're both!
"Nothing to report, training goes on mostly into a headwind with rain lashing into my face." Alistair Brownlee
"Nice to see some blue up top today and even that thing I believe is called the sun" Alistair Brownlee
"Thought I was cold cycling this evening...I then took a drink and realised my drink wasn't frozen...told myself to man up!" Johnny Brownlee
- The good doctor Mitch Anderson's long range weather forecast for Falls Creek (Aus long course titles) is a high of 10 degrees celsius…pack some warm race gear folks.
- One of the more intriguing questions for 2012 will be the final destination of one Chris McCormack. His first hit out of 2012 in NZ saw him in 6th place behind winner Aaron Royle. We put up both times by way of comparison (below). The selectors are going to have to think of whether they want consistency or a game changer
1st Aaron Royle AUS 00:58:24 00:08:51 00:35:09 00:14:24
6th Chris McCormack AUS 00:59:05 00:09:41 00:34:43 00:14:41

by flies eyes, 07 February 2012I would love to have been a fly on the wall at what made Jono Hall, finally pull the pin. lets be honest, the TAHP brass are a joke, if they cant retain coaches like that. It must have been something pretty heavy to make the call to switch teams.
by eastdillon, 06 February 2012Double Macca's swim and you've got a 1:40 gap.
by melanie bourne, 06 February 2012Atkinson only confirmed what we knew 10 years ago - untouchable over the short course formats. That is not the same as not being a spent force.
The real question was where was Dan Wilson?
Hope Macca goes just for a laugh at the bolympics. bored with it already.
tri aus wtf do they actually do?
